Traveling to Tulum during Covid

by Vicky Penaloza, 4:30 PM

 Hola!

First of all, I want to start this blog post by saying that I'm not encouraging anybody to travel during this time, I'm just sharing the experience of my trip. Everybody knows their personal situation and if you're planning to go please be respectful of other people and wear your mask, take care of yourself, and get tested before you go.

The story about why we went to Mexico is personal and I won't share details but we had to go on an emergency trip to Cuernavaca. Since we were already there, we decided to go to Tulum for a few days. Our experience in Cuernavaca was really good and I was really impressed that everybody was following health rules and that all the places had sanitizing stations and temperature checks. Even to enter the mall you have to do this before you enter, which was something new for me since malls here are not doing that.

Since we felt pretty safe in Cuerna, we decided to travel to Tulum for a few days. Here's our experience traveling to Tulum during the pandemic:

Transportation

We flew on Delta and we loved their service. They offered hand sanitizer and wipes so we could clean our seats. Also, they assigned seats with an empty seat in between to everybody even if you're traveling together and you have to wear your face mask the whole flight.  Once in Tulum, I'd recommend renting a car there. It's so easy to drive from the airport to Tulum and you don't have to be in contact with anybody. There are also taxis and shuttles but for us renting a car is the way to go. Stay

We stayed at 2 hotels: Posada Punta Piedra and Hotel Emporio Cancun.

Posada Punta Piedra:

We booked 3 nights at this hotel in Tulum. This is our second time staying here and our experience was good. It's a really nice and affordable hotel that includes free breakfast. Tbh I hated breakfast so I suggest to go and find another option for that. This hotel is at the beginning of all the Tulum hotels and there are a few stores and restaurants close. For us, it was perfect since there are not as many people there as in other hotels. They have a private beach and a restaurant bar. Also, all the beach beds are free for hotel guests. Keep in mind that most of the hotels in Tulum are ecologic and environmentally sustainable. They use recyclable products for almost everything and all their amenities are eco-friendly.  Book hotel HERE

Things to do in Tulum during Covid.

There are lots of fun activities to do in Tulum but this time we decided to have a relaxing time. Here are a few things that we did there:

Drove to Playa Paraiso

Ok, this is by far one of my favorite things to do every time we go to Tulum. It's 15min drive from Posada Punta Piedra and the beach is beautiful. It's called Paraiso because of how beautiful it looks. This beach is far from the fancy hotels in Tulum and it's where you can find affordable beach beds to relax and restaurants. You can rent 2 beach beds with umbrellas for $150 pesos. We spent a whole day there drinking beers, eating delicious seafood, and enjoying the amazing beach.

Visited Nomade Hotel and restaurant

This wasn't in our plans but I'm glad that we went to this hotel. We initially planned to go to Pablo Escobar mansion to eat and take some pictures but they were charging $2000 pesos per person to enter the mansion. We didn't know that you needed to pay that price even if you only go to the restaurants. We decided not to enter since it was already late and we weren't planning to use the amenities. This is something that we have to do next time we go and plan to spend the whole day there, but let's go back to Nomade Tulum, this hotel was next to the mansion so we decided to check it out and eat in La Popular restaurant. We were impressed with the beautiful modern boho decoration. I seriously wanted to take pictures in every corner. I'm not going to lie, the food and drinks were a little pricey but worth it! It was one of our favorite dinners of the whole trip and the view of the turquoise water while we were eating was amazing. I totally recommend to go here and eat in their restaurant. We were so in love with this place that we want to stay there the next time we go. More info about this Hotel HERE

Sunset drinks at Kin Toh (Azulik)

I've been wanting to go here for a long time so I was really excited when we visited for the first time. This is the place that you see on Instagram all the time. It's so popular and it's because the whole concept of the hotel is beautiful. It's like a fancy treehouse with amazing jungle and ocean views. I read a lot of reviews and most of the reviews say to go there at sunset for drinks. We paid $35 dollars each to enter the restaurant and they give you a complimentary drink from their menu. It's also a little pricey but you can take pictures anywhere, so basically you're also paying to have a mini photoshoot there which I didn't mind. Sadly, the day that we went was cloudy and it started raining but we had an amazing time and we will definitely go back the next time we go.

Visited Tulum Pueblo

This is one of the things that you have to do when you go. Tulum pueblo is really different than the hotel zone. In the pueblo, you can enjoy a more traditional meal and see more locals. We always go there to eat burritos at Burrito Amor and then have a mojito at Batey which is one of the most popular mojito bars there. They have also a cheaper artisan market with lots of cute items.

Enjoy the beach

One of the main reasons why we go to Tulum is because of the beautiful beach. The water is so warm and blue that you don't want to be anywhere else. This is mostly the only thing that we did this time. We usually visit cenotes and do fun activities but this time we decided just to enjoy the beach and be by ourselves.

Lastly, We stayed in Emporio Cancun the last day since the airport was 15 min away from the hotel. This hotel was really good and it's a different experience from the hotels in Tulum since this is a resort. We really like this hotel, our room was really nice and all the amenities were new and modern. My husband actually wanted to stay more days in the hotel to take advantage of everything lol. Maybe next time we stay more days here too. It was also really affordable too. Link HERE

Hope you enjoy this review and let me know if you have any questions. Also, if you're thinking of going please help the locals and small businesses. They're having a really bad time with the pandemic and they really need our help. Here are a few  places that I recommend to go:

-Mariscos Las Koras (10 min from the Cancun Airport)

-Boccanera Pizzeria y Cerveceria

-Restaurant Pancho Villa (Playa Paraiso)

-All businesses in Playa Paraiso

-Batey bar in Tulum Pueblo

-Burrito Amor restaurant

-Buy from the artisan market in Tulum pueblo

-Buy candy from the street vendors
